| 作品情報: | In recent years ,the artist Kohei Nawa is developing the series from the concept , PixCell = Pixel ( the pixel ) + Cell ( the cell and the receptacle ). I want to try an approach from the Eastern viewpoint , especially Buddhism about this PixCell series. PixCell series is the work group which asks “seeing ”or "“knowing ”directly. It is possible to classify into three kinds mainly from the difference of the expression way. The first , 《The "Beads" series 》which covers material with the transparent glass beads. The second , 《The "Prism" series》 that is the box of the virtual image by the prismatic sheet. The third , 《The "Liquid" series》that the bubble appears and disappears. ---- I write three kinds of these PixCell series respectively since then with PixCell(Beads)・PixCell(Prism)・PixCell(Liquid).
Mr.Nawa explains PixCell(Beads) as follows on his home page.
“By covering surface of an object with transparent grass beads, the existence of the object itself is replaced by “a husk of light”, and the new vision “the cell of an image”(PixCell) is shown. Most of the motifs, like stuffed animals are found through the Internet. I search some auction sites and choose from the images which appear on a monitor as pixel. However, the stuffed animals which actually have been purchased and sent have real flesh feel and smell, and have a discrepancy with images on the monitor. I then transpose them to PixCell in turn.” (http://www.kohei-nawa.net/port/beads0.html)
As for understanding from this explanation, Mr.Nawa has three times experience “to see“about an object when he makes PixCell. The first time , he “sees”the object which has set on monitor of computer as pixel. The second time , he purchases the object by online auction , and send it his home , he “sees” it. The third time , he covers the object with glass beads and “sees” it. In spite of seeing same object, as for each step, the reality is different. Eyes can see the object that is on the Internet but it is not here. It is sent to here and exists. However, by covering with the glass beads, “ it ”gets not to be “it ”. I have known it surely, but it will become the one not to know. Even if I actually touche Pixcell(Beads) , I'm obstructed by the glass beads wall and I don't find what it is.. The sight goes through the transparent glass beads wall and reaches the object , but on the other hand, it is bounced by grains of glass beads , I seem shown the image which is reflected in it. As for the grain of glass beads , the light (or the wave ) which was made a pixel with the screen of the computer seems expanded. The image is replaced with material and also returns into the image. However, as expected, PixCell(Beads) is a real material. It is here. It is possible to be seen. What can be seen? I see the object which is covered with the glass beads ? It isn't possible to be well seen because of grains of glass beads. . I don’t understand that it is in as material one that I am seeing? Or, is it the image which is reflected in the grain. It isn't possible to be caught though it is here. What is this actual far?
It is ,but it is not. It is not,but it is.
To be this contrary is caused at the same time in PixCell(Beads). If seeing like Buddhism , the condition. “It is, but it is not. It is not, but it is.” is possible to paraphrase as “有即無 無即有” (u soku mu mu soku u ) . As for the condition【即(soku)】, two different ( or, think that it is different ) ones become one. 【即(soku)】, it is moreover shown in the word, 【不二(funi)】. 【不二(funi)】means that it is not dividing two . The way of thinking, such 【即(soku)】and 【不二(funi)】, seems to be expressed as circle in Zen Buddhism . As for the circle , the beginning and the end are the same time. Then, there is not in the beginning and at the end. In other words “The beginning is the end . The end is the beginning .” It is possible to think that the circle is a place with the condition which continues to happen always【即(soku)】. By this circle, I want to attempt to think about PixCell(Beads). PixCell(Beads) is using glass beads. This beads is a sphere. Wherever it sees from, the sphere is circular. In other words, it is possible to say that the spherical glass beads is expressing perfect circularity. The circularity is the form which shows 【即(soku)】and【不二(funi)】. The glass beads on the surface (epidermis) produces a condition, “ It is, but it is not. It is not ,but it is. ” This seems to be full in the meaning, the choice of the material. With this glass beads, it is possible to confirm on PixCell(Beads) is status, “一即多 多即一”(ichisokuta tasokuichi / 1 is numerous , numerous is 1) of the Buddhism. . The material which is included in PixCell(Beads) is one. However, because it is covered with a lot of glass beads, material inside is filmed to the number of the beads. We are seeing “1 ”and “numerous ” in PixCell(Beads) at the same time .
Next, Mr.Nawa explains about PixCell(Prism) that is the work which was developed from PixCell(Beads).
“With prism sheets which divide the direction of light into two, the image which must be visible from different angles (the azimuth difference of both eyes is also included) appears, and the object which should exist in a box drifts as a virtual image.” (http://www.kohei-nawa.net/port/prism0.html)
For example, if saying about PixCell[Zebra], as for me, one stuffed animal of zebra is included in the transparent acrylic fiber box “I know”. However, the zebra that my eyes can see actually is not one. As I know, it can’t be seen. Like the time of PixCell(Beads), “ It is, but it is not. It is not,but it is. ”condition is caused at the same time. The ambiguous, noncommittal and unstable feelings which occurs because it sees PixCell . To ask here will be the problem of real and the reality. To think about this thing, I want to take up 【空(kuu) 】of the Buddhism thought. 【空(kuu) 】 is the following way of thinking. . --The things in the world are the temporary existence that occurred from the cause and the condition. So , there is not fixed substance.-- As the concrete instance, if thinking of me from the 【空(kuu)】 thought , it will be as follows. I don't have substance. However, the cause and the condition occur and I live here now. In other words, I live in the middle of this“there is ”and“ there is not ”. Real in this place will be what? The fact "there is" should be a realistic thing. But, when letting through a filter, 【空(kuu)】, the reality of “there is”thing becomes ambiguous. The feel of real and reality in this 【空(kuu)】seem same as it of PixCell(Beads) and PixCell(Prism).
Next, Mr.Nawa is explaining PixCell(Liquid) as follows.
“The bubbles perpetually appear and disappear, and they continue producing an organic image in the water surface which emits white light like a screen. It is a matrix itself which bears images.” (http://www.kohei-nawa.net/port/liquid1.html)
The bubble appears in the surface of the water , and disappears . It is possible to associate with the Buddhism thought【諸行無常(shogyoumujyou)】from here. 【諸行無常(shogyoumujyou)】means that all ones in this world change and aren't staying in a little time, too. The bubbles of PixCell(Liquid) which appear and disappear one after another. They don't have an end. To awaken from here is the chain or the circulation of the things. So, I paid attention to Mr.Nawa's ball-point pen drawing about the chain. Mr.Nawa says that the idea of PixCell(Liquid) derived from the ball-point pen drawing. Then, the material and the way of creating to use for a drawing are explained as follows.
“By rolling ink on the paper which dose not absorb water , I can draw like knitting grains and lines of the ink . Ink is collected in the surface tension while it slides on the paper. Then, ink becomes hard. It is the silicone that was being waterproof in the paper surface at this time. That is the same as using for PixCell(Liquid).” (http://www.kohei-nawa.net/jp/port/liquid_0159.html)
From this explanation , it finds that the encounter with 〈 the silicon 〉on the ball-point pen drawing is important when creating PixCell(Liquid). However, I want to pay attention to the expression of Mr.Nawa’s “ I can draw like knitting grains and lines of the ink .” in here most. The relation between this grain and the line made me recall “Indra network”. Indra is greatest god Indra in scripture “Rgveda”in the Indian oldest. Later, this god is taken in to the Buddhism and becomes the god【帝釈天(taisyakuten)】who defends the Buddhism . The Indra network is the rope which is thrown around the palace in this god【帝釈天(taisyakuten)】. And a ball is put to each knot by this network. These balls are each other reflected. The reflected ball reflects the others infinitely .In this relation, it is expressing 【重重無尽(jyujyumujin) on 【華厳経(kegonkyo)】that is one of the Buddhism scriptures. It explainis that all ones link mutually boundlessly and they exist. That is “一即一切 一切即一”(ichisokuissai issaisokuichi / One is all , all is one.) . This is the Buddhism thought which was derived from “一即多 多即一”(ishisokuta tasokuichi / 1 is numerous , numerous is 1.) . “一即多 多即一”which referred in PixCell(Beads) appears in the technique of the ball-point pen drawing, too. Is it accident or natural that PixCell(Liquid) derives from this ball-point pen drawing.? Anyway, that is interesting. By the way, I want to comment about the material which is called 〈 silicone 〉.〈 silicone 〉 is the resin which made silicon of primary concern. It is used for a transformer to be insulated and for the fiber to be waterproof and so on. In the ball-point pen drawing, this 〈 silicone 〉 was being waterproof on the paper surface. Mr.Nawa introduces about this 〈 silicone 〉on his home page. He says“It has the intermediate characteristic of the organic and inorganic matter.” --- I feel that the intermediate characteristic appears in the creating status of Mr.Nawa who joins the grain and the grain of the ball-point pen drawing, too. The agency and the middle-ness will have the attractiveness of Mr.Nawa as the artist. I found the following words in the end of the doctoral thesis which Mr.Nawa presented Kyoto City University of Arts .
『 I am having question to the surface of 〈 the reality 〉. But I am not intention of denying about the figment which is essentially contained there . 』 (「Sensibility and epidermis ― A methodology of the present sculpture」 Kohei Nawa , Kyoto City University of Arts , 2003)
From this words, I understand that Mr.Nawa doesn't need determination. As ambiguous, he tries to go. Mr.Nawa's middle-ness is not the middle which has the right and the left. His middle-ness is the condition that it is both , then it is not which. The toughness which can keep this condition will become the works of PixCell series. So far, I saw about three kinds of PixCell series such as (Beads)・(Prism)・(Liquid). It is the fact of “one”that will have been common to any ? Even if it says “one”, it is not absolute “one” , but the meaning , “not dividing two”. In the future, PixCell series will be how evaluated ? Regardless of Mr.Nawa's intention, the happening will start. Lastly , I will write the most obedient feeling . For me, PixCell is the one flower whichi is tendered for the world from Mr.Nawa's hand. I see it silently ,and smile with a nod .
